Hi, I am Beth and this is my podcast, A Friend in Your Ear. Friends are so important in our lives. They support us through the good and the bad, the ups and the downs. They give us the space to grow and the grace to fail. They are our biggest cheerleaders when we are our harshest critics. They're not just here for us, but they're here with us, and that's what this podcast is all about, being a friend in your ear. I'm a lawyer turned stylist and fashion blogger who built a successful styling business, and now I work from home running an online business. I spend a lot of time reading books, listening to audiobooks, and listening to podcasts. My favourite podcasts offer me advice, comfort, support, wisdom, and fun when my real life friends are busy. And this is a place where I can take what I've learnt and deliver it in a way that hopefully makes your life easier, gives you something to ponder and brings a little joy to your day. Think of this as a chat with a friend, a place where you can come to reminisce for nostalgia, a giggle and a place to find answers to something that might be bothering you. So whether you are out on a run or a walk on the school run, being a taxi to your kids or grandkids on a Zoom meeting with your. Or sitting with a glass of something cold in your hand. Welcome to the A Friend In Your Ear podcast. Hello, and welcome to episode four of this 5, 5, 5 mini series that I have created for you. Five podcast episodes over five days. Talking about five different subjects with five topics in each. On day one, we looked at things that I'm really rubbish at day two was things that I'm quite good at. Day three as my biggest fears. And today I am going to be looking at five spiritual practices that I undertake on a daily basis. With the hope that they keep me on the straight and narrow. No. This was something that I started to dive into in may of last year. I have a podcast episode, which I'll link to in the show notes, where I talk about the first retreat that I went on and it totally, and utterly opened my eyes to a different world that was out there in terms of sitting in circle with other women. Doing naked swimming in the white well in Glastonbury drumming. What else did we do some amazing activities? We climbed the tour. I learnt about Oracle cards, drank a cow, all sorts of things, totally outside my comfort zone. Made a total ass of myself on more than one occasion, but absolutely thoroughly loved it. And since then, my spiritual practice has grown. And each day there's five things that I do or try and do. I don't necessarily do all of them every day, but there's five things that I rotate between at least. Just to keep me grounded, keep me calm, make me feel supported. Less alone, slightly less bonkers, and they seem to work. So I thought I would share them with you. In the hope that they may have a positive benefit for you too. Now it may well be the case that you already have your own spiritual practices, that this doesn't resonate with you at all. But I think the purpose of it is to encourage us all to keep an open mind. As to what else is out there and what tools we can rely on to put in our toolbox to help us to navigate the every day. In a way that keeps us feel calm together and grounded. There's lots of things that happen to us when we reach this beautiful age in life. Whether that is menopause, whether in my case, it's hysterectomy. So everything's been whipped out. Whether it's being part of the sandwich generation. Whether it's elderly relatives needing a small and perhaps passing away, whether it's children leaving home, there are so many things that come together. It can be things to do with your career as well. General health issues, general. Where are you going to live for the next few years of your life? So many things can suddenly go up in the air that it can be a really, really challenging time in life. And I think that sometimes we need to look. To see what else is around us that we can rely on support on. Like I say, tools to put in our toolbox just to help us to navigate as we go through this slightly tricky or can be tricky stage of life. It can be a brilliant stage as well. Lots of things can open up for us. We can have more time. We can have more energy. We can have opportunities to do things that we perhaps couldn't. If we were really tied to a career or to the home or whatever it may be, there's always good. And more challenging, but there are things that we can do that we can incorporate into our lives to make it just that little bit easier. So, let me share with you the five things that I do that really have made such a massive difference. The first thing that I really got into once I'd been on this retreat was pulling Oracle cards and I actually went on a course I'll link in the show notes again. But I took a course. To learn how to read Oracle cards and what Oracle cards are all about really is helping you to access your intuition. So it's not looking outside of yourself answers, which was one of my biggest failings that I talked about earlier in the week. I was looking outside for answers and really all we need to do is look inside ourselves. It really helped me to turn inwards, to find out. What my intuition was telling me. And that's what the Oracle cards do. So basically you have a deck of cards that you're drawn to. There's normally 44 cards in a deck. I think. Or in a pack. And I've got various different packs now, but I just draw the ones that I like the colors of. And I remember saying to Catherine, who I was on the retreat with, who ran it. Saying to her, does this make me really shallow? That I'm just drawn to cards. I think we're looking at my house and she said, no, that's absolutely fine because you're going to have to like something about them. So some people like the colors, some people like the pictures, some people know the person who's made the set. Perhaps they've got an existing set from them and they just like those. Some people like the topic, so they could be on. Gods and goddesses, they could be on angels. They could be on light. They could be the rose cards. They could be water cards. They're my favorite at the moment. So I have these different packs of cards. And I'll shuffle them and I'll just wait to see what falls out. And then I've been taught how to read them. They always come with a little guide book, which you can take a look at as well, if you want to. I quite like to do that too. And it just brings about a real calming effect, particularly when you keep putting the same cards over and over again, because you think, well, the chances of me putting the same cars asked for packer 40 for four days in a row is probably really fairly, quite slim. But. It's a very individual thing. They're not for everyone, but personally I love them. At the start of the day, they just set me up for the day. They helped me feel supported. By the universe by my soul family. And to give me a real calm sense of peace as I go throughout my day, much more settled. So that's what I love about the cards. Like I say, I went in the course too. Teach me how to read them, how to interpret them, how to read them for other people. Amazing course. And it's brought me so much value. So that's the first thing. The second thing I've also been on a course to do this is Reiki. Now I've done my Reiki one course, and I'm going to do my Reiki two course in a few weeks. And what I love about Reiki is it is just so calming. Reiki energy is all around us. And it's a question of opening yourself up to it. And drawing it in. And the aim is that it clears the seven chakras. You basically draw the Reiki energy in and down and clear each of these chakras. And if you think of the shack quizzes, like little wheels so that they can all turn and the energy can flow through and you don't have any blockages. And you're not stuck. So really common example of this is the throat. Shakra lots of women, their throat shakra. Is closed there's things they want to say, they feel silenced. They're not able to express themselves. And so Reiki helps to open the throat. Shakra and there's other things you can do as well. Like singing. It's just really interesting. I love how it works. And anybody can access it. Anybody can learn it. And it's just a really beautiful, calming thing. To do a really calming practice on yourself. When I did my Reiki training for 21 days after that, I had to do Reiki on myself. And I find that I start to wake up in the mornings naturally a bit earlier than my husband. But I don't like to get up to disturb him, so I'll just lie in bed and do it. And it's a really lovely way to start the day to the, even before you've got out of bed. You've just really grounded yourself. You've done your Reiki. You've checked all your channels are open. So it's not a case of waking up and picking up your phone and scrolling through or. You know, doing something that is a really sort of either negative energy or a really Distribion masculine type of energy. It's just a very gentle way to start the day. And again, I'm a big believer that if you set the day at right for yourself, then. You're onto a winner. And that doesn't mean to say that you have to have this two hour. Morning routine that involves. 50,000 different steps. The Reiki takes me 10 minutes and I'm lying there in bed anyway, so that doesn't even count in terms of impacting on my day. The cards will probably take me five, 10 minutes, and I don't do that at the same time. You can do a little reset. Throughout the day, if you want to and intersperse these at a time that fit you. Another practice that I do, which is something you can just do really simply. And on your own I'll link, actually in the show notes, I did a little workshop on, this is really an expensive it's about 17 pounds, but teaching you how to drop into your heart space. So rather than. Operating from your Headspace and that very, again, that masculine energy, I have done an episode about masculine and feminine energy. We need them both. We need them to work together, but they do need to be imbalanced and sometimes. They're not. And so that very frenetic energy of making lists to needing to achieve and striving and thriving and go, go, go. Isn't always great for us, or if it is, if we operate in that kind of working environment, then it's about dropping into the heart space as well, which is the feminine space. It's about looking at the world through the eyes of the heart. So it's just closing your eyes, taking some deep breaths. Drawing your energy down to your heart. And just sitting, I sit with my hands on my heart and I'm like, what's my heart actually telling me about this. It's again, it's coming back into your intuition. So it's switching off the buzzy outside noise of what you ought to do, what you should do, what you think people are telling you to do, what society is demanding you to do. And just getting very quiet and getting very, still. And just coming into your heart space and operating from there as well, because I don't personally believe that there's any greater. Signpost map. Roadmap for life blueprint for life than what our intuition is telling us. Now that doesn't mean that I'm saying you should go off and never put a mountain somewhere. I mean, you might get eaten by a line for a start. If you don't know what I'm talking about. Listen to the previous episode. But it's all with a balance, but it's just taking the time to. Tap into our heart space and the feminine energy and just quietening down, taking some deep breaths and just really listening to what our intuition is telling us as well. The fourth thing that I do is read spiritual books and I normally have one on the go at the moment. Let me just grab my book here. You might be able to hear me doing this. I am reading a book called Mary revealed. Bye Meghan Watterson. And that's all about Mary Magdalen is so fascinating. It's about. Gospel of Mary Magdalene, how it was hidden, how it wasn't included in the Bible, the roles of women. At around the time Jesus was living and how they haven't been represented in the Bible. And the Bible has been put together by various different men over the ages and everything that women contributed pretty much was left out of it. Or if they were included, they were painted it in a really negative way. So there was. Eve. At the great temperatures. There was Mary Magdalene. She was said to be a prostitute, that's now been retracted and she wasn't. So that was just a fascinating book. And there's lots of. Interesting things in there, which I had never even contemplated before, but have helped answer a lot of questions to me when it comes to religion, I've always believed that the principles of. Religion, Christianity, whatever, all good and good ones for us to live our lives by, but it's never really hadn't together with me properly. I've had too many questions and there are books out there that just help to answer some of those questions. And they're interesting and they're different. And then the type of books I probably would never have thought about reading years ago. Some of the first books I started with were by Gabby Bernstein. She's done super attractor. The universe has my back they're lovely books. And then Rebecca Campbell, she's done some great books as well. They just, like I say, just make you start to think in a different way. And that's also when I started reading the book that I've referred to a few times now called listen. The books about masculine and feminine energy, the divine feminine by Layla moon. They're just interesting. They're different. They give you a different perspective and get the cogs turning again. So spiritual books are something that is nice just to have by the side of your bed. You can read a few pages. Before you sleep at night or even in the middle of the day, sometimes I'll just grab a book and read a few pages, see where the book falls open and really enjoy that as part of my spiritual practice. And then the last thing that I have, which really helps me is I've got a couple of apps actually on my phone. I've got insight timer. And I've also got the Gabby Bernstein app now. Insight timer. I had the free version for a while. And then after I had my hysterectomy operation, I got the paid version because there was some courses on there that I really wanted to listen to. There wasn't much else that I could do at that point in life. So it was worth me upgrading for that. But the free version is great. There's all sorts of things on there. There's meditations. There's talks. There's courses. I took a course on breath work, which was really interesting. Just learning all about it is something we totally take for granted, but it was really interesting to learn about that. And there's all sorts of really interesting courses on there, which I found helpful and just something to dip into and out of by way of interest. And then the Gabby Bernstein app, I started off by signing up to her manifesting challenge, which she runs every year. I was just quite interested to see what it was about. And then on her app, she's got different talks that she's delivered. And I quite wanted to go to one in London last year. But wasn't able to make it, but the whole talk is on there. She's got a series of talks. She's got meditations. She's got all sorts of different bits and bobs on her app. So that is something else that I use as well as part of my daily spiritual practice. So just to recap on those, there's the Oracle cards. There's Reiki, there's a practice of dropping into my heart. Like I say, I'll link to the little workshop that I did. Below there's reading spiritual books. And then there's different apps to do with meditation manifesting. And of course I ought to mention. Retreats that I've been on as well. That's the sixth one, I guess that makes up for the fact that yesterday, when I was talking about my five biggest fears, There were only actually four I'll take one of those and turn it into one of my spiritual practices. So there was the retreat that I went on last may. Which was a three-day retreat down in Glastonbury. I've also run. A retreat day and I've got another one coming up in February. So we're in 20, 24 now. So it's on Friday, the 23rd of February. If you'd like to find out details about that. Just pop me a message on Instagram or pop me the word fire or the little fire emoji, and you will get detailed sent to you about that. So that's a lovely day of relaxation. Nourishment being held and supported. And I've also recently been to a Mary Magdalene day, retreat myself as well. And that was five pillars. So there's something that you can get a huge amount of value and benefit out of. By not even going away overnight, if it's local to you. You can get so much value out of going to a day-long retreat, probably almost as much value. As having four or five day holiday if it's structured properly. So that definitely definitely worth looking into if you're just feeling at that stage in your life where you could do with taking a breather, having a little bit of time for you. Unraveling a few issues, sorting a few things out, getting yourself and your thinking and your emotions back on the straight and narrow so that you feel more grounded. And more able to deal with life. I hope that you've enjoyed this podcast episode. We've now done four out of the five of the 5, 5, 5 mini-series.
